To the Holy Church of the Absurd Scientific Tao, the atom represents the illusion that matter is solid.  It may appear to be so in our small component of the universe (or multiverse), but it is really more of a energy field or force with a facade of solidarity.  The point is we are dealing with an illusion that we live in a world made of solid matter .  What we experience are energy forces deflecting and attracting us to and from them.  To The Church atomic theory represents another instance where the true nature of  the universe is, as J. B. S. Haldane (1892 - 1964) said, "not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose."

Though the word atom originally denoted a particle that cannot be cut into smaller parts, in modern scientific usage the atom is composed of various subatomic particles. The constituent particles of an atom are the electron, the proton and the neutron. However, the hydrogen-1 atom has no neutrons and a positive hydrogen ion has no electrons.  Atoms exist in the realm (or reality) of quantum mechanics.1

Smaller particles exist as both protons and neutrons are composed of elementary particles called quarks. The quark belongs to the fermion group of particles, now thought to be one of the two basic constituents of matter—the other being the lepton, of which the electron is an example.  There are six types of quarks, each having a fractional electric charge.  Protons are composed of two up quarks (The up quark or u quark is the lightest of all quarks) and one down quark (or d quark is the second-lightest of all quarks,), while a neutron consists of one up quark and two down quarks. . The quarks are held together by the strong nuclear force  (The four known fundamental interactions , sometimes called interactive forces, are electromagnetism, strong interaction, weak interaction (also known as "strong" and "weak nuclear force" and gravitation).

Around the neutron there is also a tremendous amount of space in the electron cloud. Even in a substance as hard as a diamond, there is far more empty space between the subatomic particles than there is space occupied by those particles (see video).

Solidity of a substance is the result of the strong electrical bonds between electrons and their nuclei.  Despite their distance from the nucleus, the negatively charged electrons are held strongly in place by their attraction to the protons in the atom's center. This attraction creates a great deal of structural integrity and a strong force that repels the electrons of other atoms.  Despite the empty spaces that exist in every atom, because of the fundamental interactive forces of electromagnetism, strong interaction and weak interaction. when we lean on a tabletop, our hands cannot pass through the wood or metal of that surface.
